I've heard it before. Usually is posted at campsites and such. It's a good thing to live by. You should always clean up behind yourself and respect the Earth so others may come behind you and enjoy the beauty there as well. I heard another motto that I incorporated into my personal philosophy: Always leave a place better than when you found it! I think if more people did that, the world would be a much more beautiful place.

It's an ethic followed by those who respect the countryside and wild places.

The pictures / footprint thing was an expression used originally by Himalayan mountaineers and means that when you pass through an area the only sign you were ever there are your footprints (no litter, no faeces, no damage etc left behind). Similarly the only thing you take are photos, you don't take the plants or anything else you find.

Kill nothing but time is a simialr modern variation - it means to pass through an area without killing anything - no shooting, stalking, hunting, fishing etc.

I've been climbing mountains for a good many years and have been fortunate enough to visit some of the wildest and remotest places on the planet. It's an ethic we always try to adhere to. There's nothing worse then being in some beautiful natural location and coming across discarded litter, panty liners, poop etc.

The non-permanence of life is the reason for me to accept your question in assertion. I do not think there is any bigger purpose of our lives or the lives of all other living beings of the world. Why we are born and then die one day is a mystery. Many have tried to explain the phenomenon without real success and we the simple people with limited knowledge are just puzzled with experts' opinions. What you do today has some meaning today and what you do tomorrow has the meaning for that day. As time flows, the past of everyday goes to the hibernation permanently. Sometimes we may recollect the past but that does not bring much meaningful changes in our lives in the sense that life would cease one day. Our so-called collections, knowledge, help, good deeds, assets, parents, kith and kins, etc become just nothing once we are no more. And we don't know what happens after our death. Therefore I accept life as really nothing except living those few years peacefully.

Don't exist. As a Conservative I am also a conservationist who believes in having little impact on the wilderness. I want pictures and memories, but eating a few leaves or flowers won't hurt if there are plenty of them, if few let them be. Taking a pebble does no harm. Burying your trash, the biodegradable type, or carefully burning it, is OK, but take the empty cans and bottles with you. Don't leave any trash for the next person to see. Hunt and fish according to the rules and eat what you kill. Bury any remains and thank God for the provision of that animal for your nourishment.

The statement given is too simplistic for me and does not reflect me as another animal in the environment. As a part of the environment I will interact with it and not pretend I do not exist.

Well to me it means, don't take anything like flowers, rocks, and such for mementos, instead just take pictures as mementos instead.

Don't leave trash and stuff strewn around, but footprints won't cause much harm.

Don't kill any animals or plants etc, but do spend time here.

Pretty much make sure that you don't ruin the area for the next set of people or animals that want to visit.

This would be a purely low impact camping/hiking comment by a nature lover.

Take nothing but pictures...leave things as they are and where they are just observe them and enjoy them

Leave nothing but footprints....make sure you have any trash you may have created and do not leave it out in the wilderness

Kill nothing but time...no killing for killing's sake

Its part of Countryside code.
Very good aims for people who know little about their impact on an area to strive towards. Minimises their effect on an area.

Can cause problems for those managing the countryside, when townies fail to realise the advice is aimed at themselves, not those for those who work and live in the countryside and understand its workings.

eg In the right circumstances burning of Heather improves biodiversity, but it is contrary to countryside code. (Code should also say "respect local knowledge")

zyllee hit the nail right on the head ... leave it suitable for the next person or animal that wishes to use the area.

Treat nature with the same respect you would treat a friends home. You don't go there, steal their stuff, litter, spill beer on their furniture, kick their cat and then leave. Give nature the respect it deserves, your life depends on it.

To me......
It means don't take or steal anything but memories to treasure, leave nothing but something that you can be fondly remembered by wherever you go, and be humane, and kind, killing nothing in your path but the time that has gone by. I like that, it is very deep.
