If he has to go back through Basic Training and AIT then he has been out of the Military too long...or he was in another branch....I had to go to Basic and AIT all over again...I was a Security Policeman in the USAF for 8 yrs and got out for 3 yrs....so yeah it is common...
You say you are dating...that is great...BUT PLEASE know what you are getting into...there is no pain in the world like being somewhere all alone fighting your *** off to come home just to realize that a) there was no one to come back to or b) the person you chose to be with cant handle the stressors or time away....
We are in the middle of a crisis...we have things going on in Korea...Iraq...Iran...Afghanistan...Africa....Bosnia (STILL)...rotations have become SOP anymore....and for the Army while they say its only 15 months trust me I have been told by some of my friends and fellow SGT's over there that they have been briefed anywhere from 15 to 24 months!!
So as much as you like him...be sure you can stand by him...if not...explain it to him...he would much rather have you up front and honest then to get a Dear John (email seems to be the trend today!) out there and really bring down his already lowered morale....
Just something to think about and something I tell all my soldiers sweethearts when they start dating...that way if I do that and put everything out there...I can do better damage control with the soldier when he feels like he wants to blame his decision to join and why he cant successful (in his mind) relationships...best of luck to you both...and if he has been in before believe me basic is a breeze now...he will be bored...send him lots of packages

Yes. When I was in, if you were more than five years separated, you needed to go back to Basic again. This applied to my Assistant Platoon Guide, a former Ranger medic who re-enlisted after going to college and working again.

It also applied to my Platoon Guide, Sgt. Marshall, who was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy who switched over from the Navy to the Army. Both were in my Basic Training Program.

depends on how long he was out before he reenlisted or what branch he is switching too. if he goes back to the same branch that he was in before. then he wouldn't need to go through basic again but he would need to go through AIT if he wants a different job than what the had before.

he will also have to go through basic training if say he is switching from air force or navy to army or from army to marines. if he was a marine before then he should not have to go through basic again since marine basic training is the longest and hardest of all branches.

Most of the people are speaking of how he has been out for too long and that is partially true. The other thing is that new equipment and training methods are coming into the system, so they really dont want someone who has gotten used to being a relaxed civilian trying to remember what he learned several years ago that is no longer in the system.

yes, especially if he is coming from a different Branch or has been out of the Army more than a couple of years. he would also have to go through AIT again if he is changing MOSs.

it all depends on how long he was gone or what branch of service he was in.

some people just have a "refresher" basic and ait. shorter and less dumb stuff.
