isn't that exactly what happens when any animal gets pregnant? In the short-term obviously, but the fact remains that from one fertilized egg, the fetus grows into a multi-celled organism. And along the way, parts are built, changed, rebuilt, until you get the end result.

So why can't this happen on a larger, global scale and involve periodic mutation/adaptation to, over time, create new species?

A lot can happen in 100 million years.

I think the problem is A) the concept of 100 million years cannot be comprehended by humans and B) they have a preconceived notion that anything that makes evolution probable must be miscalculated or a lie.

Apparently, the creationists replying are skipping over your second paragraph.

And of course your intent here is not to "prove" that evolution happened using only this example. It's just an example to show that it is plausible. One of many, many, many such examples. The fact that observations from all branches of science continue to confirm evolution, including branches that were not yet discovered as evolutionary theory was developed, added to the fact that evolution is also an observed fact, make it pretty hard to be a creationist without putting your head in the sand.

I still think genes duplicating and then splitting off in different directions make for the best evidence, but I'm biased toward molecular biology, and scientists were pretty darned sure evolution was a fact before DNA was discovered.

Your reasoning involves a couple of major flaws.
First, you would need to clarify where that first cell that began dividing came from...also what stimulus caused it to begin to divide?
Also, your comparison to a fetus doesn't work, since, when an animal gets pregnant, all the information is there. Nobody thinks a pregnant dog might give birth to kittens, do they? Of course not. All the info is there for PUPPIES!!

Yeah, alot can happen in 100 million years. God can create a universe and populate it with all sorts of various life forms.
It doesn't take nearly that long for one curious race to come up with multiple explanations about where they came from.....

Life did not evolve. Life is beyond time so all we can say about it is that it always was and always will be. It was life that created matter, not the other way around.

What did evolve are all the different forms life manifests itself in. But life itself is present everywhere. Some call that the omnipresence of God. Life manifests in matter n the form of consciousness. And even the smallest subatomic particle has a form of consciousness, as is nowadays recognized in quantum science as well.

This will always be a heated debate. No one really knows how we got here, and it is our right to believe what we wish. I personally can believe that some "intelligent design" created us from dirt and then from a rib bone of adam. To me evolution makes more sense and there is more proof than a bible and some unseen being telling me what to believe

No, it's not the same. When an animal gets pregnant, all the information for the end result is there from the beginning. There's no chance involved, or fitness.

but that's not some species evolving into a completely different species. It's still a unicellular human changing to a multicellular human being.

yeah, if the earth WERE a million years old, which it isn't, so scientists had to say that it is to fit their agenda.
Where's all your proof? Where are all fossils of missing links? Why are there still monkeys if we evolved from them? Why haven't they evolved? Why can't you believe in an Itelligent Designer? Why do you always quesiton that there is a God who loves you, and made you above all the creatures on the earth, in His image. To me, it takes a whole lot more faith to believe in what you do, than to believe in what I believe in. God says we only need the faith the size of a Mustard seed. Do you know how small that is? I would rather believe in God, and find out that there isn't one than not to believe in one and find out there is!! It will be too late then. What if I'm right?

Genesis answers the question "Which came first , the chicken or the egg" and also indicates that which is stored in the egg/seed is information or DNA code. I did not evolve from an amoeba.
Genesis 1 - 11
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
