A great bread is the Basenji. Do not bark, do not shed do not smell. Just find a good reputable local breeder and go check them out. Great companion, tons of energy, very intelligent.

The first thing you need to do is re - evaluate wanting a dog with 2 children under 6 in the home.
Then research some breeds on-line. Google -hypoallergenic dogs, size should be less of an issue than energy level. I have a 70 lbs husky and my friend has a 25 lb terrier and guess what her dog is much more trouble than mine. Although, my boy sheds horribly this time of year.
1. hypoallergenic
2. energy level
3. ease of training.
If you pick the right dog then it won't end up in a shelter in 6-9 months which is the average for people who pick a dog that is cute instead of right for them.
Good luck!

Please don't think I am crazy, but an American Pit Bull Terrier is great with kids and families!! Petie from the little rascalls was a Pit and so was Buster Brown!!!
Considered to be the all American dog and a nanny dog. We have millions of them in the shelters that are free and they are great companions and love children!!! They minimally shed and only have a top coat. No dander!!! Easy to keep clean and no grooming required. Pits were prized family dogs until recently when they have gotten into the wrong hands and left to die in shelters. They are forced to fight to the death or trained to be aggressive.
Check www.PBRC.net for listings, resources and information!
Good Luck!!!

Well, I am allergic to dog dander, but I am getting a dog this Saturday that is super small but have been around medium sized dogs with no reaction. It really depends on the person, but I haven't reacted to shih tzus, maltipoos, or shihpoos, and they are all around the 10 lb. mark and I have had no problem with them. They are low shedding dogs, as are bishon frise and some other breeds mixed with poodles. Good luck finding the right puppy for you!!!

You have set of an avalanche - everybody will tell you about their own favorite breed. There is no such as a short haired, non shedding dog. You will have to get it groomed at lest every 6 weeks. As far as temperament goes, a lot of that is training. When you pick out your dog make sre it is laid back but friendly. My cocker has al the traits you ask for and her breed is not generally known to be quiet. Lissa is though. I can take her anywhere and she will behave herself like a lady.

I agree completely with punk 101 rocker. They are a much maligned and subsequently abused breed that are exceptional with children. Funny,highly-intellligent, playful, tolerant and very protective, You may scoff at this, but ,seriously, check it out. I have owned two and wouldn't have any other breed. If you're not convinced fine, but still check out your local shelter for a dog before going to a breeder. It's not the breed, but the temperament of the dog that matters. ( I have known vicious golden retrievers) and so many FINE animals need a home. Good luck in your search!

I would recommend a Maltese or Malti-Poo (half maltese, half poodle), these dogs are pretty small, they don't shed, they are hypo- allergetic.
Try this breed selector: http://www.puppyfinder.com/breedselector.php
Also here is some information on the maltese and also a great site to find puppies:

Also, a new breed a lot of people are getting is a labradoodle, non shedding, good with children, very smart, easy to train and the medium size you were looking for:

labra-doodles are perfect. they don't shed and people with dog allergies can be around them. this is a lab poodle mix. this breed gives u the loyalty of a lab and intelligence of a poodle. they come in three different sizes. Kinda like small medium and large. these dogs r wonderful with children.

I have a cockapoo(1/2 cocker spaniel 1/2 poodle) they are wonderful. The poodle is very intelligent and is hypo-allergenic and non-shedding; the cocker spaniel is well very cute~this makes for a super smart, very cute dog who will look like a puppy forever. I have a 3 year old and 9 year old and we love Mr. pickles our cockapoo!!! When i bathe him there is no hair filling the tub like our cane corso mastiff has.(who is large and sheds)

I have a golden retriever/labrador and he is the sweetest dog I have ever had. He is very playful, friendly and great with people. He is medium size and sheds a little.
Golden retrievers are fairly big but they help you to feel safe when they protect you. :)
