Beliefs are learned. They are not passed on genetically. Therefore they have nothing to do with evolution.

What evolution did was evolve a brain large enough to spare some room for self awareness. This led the first men to wonder just what caused the lightning, volcanoes, etc. The first answer, with absolutely no knowledge of science would naturally have been "Goddidit".This observation being borne out by the fact that each culture's god is basically reflective of that culture, instead of a universal idea of God. Time went on,the intellect of man has garnered more and more knowledge of the "how" of the world. We now know there are more precise explanations than "goddidit"and we attempt to put thousands of years of accumulated knowledge to good use, much to the chagrin of literalists, who would have us still living in caves and mud huts

What a good question!
I don't know, perheaps it helped human organization in societies, still , evolution only sees in short term (if you are not apt than you die and your genes cease to be shared by the population, natural selection dosen't care if your genes are very good for the whole population or that they will be good within 1000000 years, it only sees the here and now). So i don't buy it
Hummm, lets think, how would it improve our interaction with the enviroment to have religious beliefs?? I really don't know. I think God put it there, what dosen't mean we wont find some scientific explanation for it someday.

Just a point out to Jill there, evolution probably did create insecurity. As someone mentioned earlier, about being attacked by a cat, that's why you feel insecure. You feel potentially threatened and this illicits a response which has everything to do with adaption.

Religion is learned behavior, not genetics. That's the same as saying why did evolution create insecurity.

If you mistake a rustle in the leaves for a predator, you've wasted maybe ten seconds figuring it out. If you mistake a predator for a rustle in the leaves, you're cat food. We've been selected over generations to be paranoid and see agents and agency where there is none at all.
