For about 30 years I have wondered: When you see Bulls in the pens waiting to be riden in Rodeo's there are two straps around the Bull. I know the front strap is for the rider to hang onto, but what is that second strap toward the back of the Bull? It is also on horses waiting to be riden in the Rodeo's.

Oops I forgot...The straps are NOT removed when it is released with a rider on his back. It stays on.

It's called a Flank strap, and actually if you ask any Stock Contractor, or Bull Rider, they'll tell you it does not make him buck, what they say is if you had that thing around you, you wouldn't want to move.

so basically it's so the bull knows it's time to do his job, it won't hurt it, and they remove it right away, also contrary to popular belief, the bulls naturally buck, and the spurs don't hurt them, they (and I mean the owners of the thousand dollor animals) won't let any one hurt the bull, so it's all good.

but this is only fact in the PBR, I don't know about other rodeos.

hope that helps :) and no I'm not a rodeo girl, I just injoy the PBR, and I know a little about it :)

It hobbles the beasts back legs. This helps them get the bull or pony into the paddock. They take it off before they open the pen. This helps make the beast start kicking up a racket.
