just had x-rays yesterday because of pain in my ankle (no known injury). orthopod said pain is not related to any tendon/ligaments but seems to come directly from the bone. so he took x-ray. dark spot showed up in bone at site of pain. now he wants to do mri to get a better picture. I am freaking out! my hospital only has a portable mri that comes in twice a week (it is on a truck) and I was going to have to wait 2 weeks for an apt! I called today to ask for anything sooner..she called me back saying they were actually going to get the truck an extra day this week so I am on for Friday but still no follow up with ortho til Monday. I am telling you the anxiety is KILLING ME! What (other than a cancer) can it be??? I don't want to jump the gun here but I can't keep it out of my mind and I am so worried and going buggie!!!

I don't know about your specific case, but you should take it easy. I
Xrays are great about showing the structure of the body. however, they are somewhat technique dependant in that photopenic (dark areas) may seem enhanced or supressed depending on the tech performing the exam. It could be a spot of arthritis. Additionally, it could be a greenstick fracture (I hope I used the correct term) caused by and incomplete fracture in the bone from compression or twisting motions at the ankle. Lastly, it could be osteoporosis (failure of the body to store calcium in bone) and you might have tweeked the ankle a bit.
It sounds like you are pretty young, and if there is no family history or personal history of cancer, it seems unlikely that this would be the case. Metastatic cancer typically stays in the axial skeleton (chest, ribs, back, femur and humerus) unless it comes from malignant melanoma, which you would probably know by now. If you are still freaked, call your ortho and have him let you know what is going on over the phone.
Relax and breath, it is probably something of little concern;)

I know what you're going through! I just had x-rays done Tuesday for extreme pain of some duration, resistant to exercise, rest or heat in my left shoulder/arm. The x-ray showed a "dark spot" on the clavicle. The doc asked if I'd ever broken the collarbone; I have not.
I'm scheduled for a CT scan and whole-body scan on Monday, and I'm asking the same question. What can it be??
I'm going a little buggie too. :(

You could get a second opinion. X-rays aren't always read the same. Once I was in an auto accident and had to have an x-ray of my neck and the technician told me that I should go to my doctor's immediately because I severe osteoporosis, to make a long story short, turns out that not only did I not have osteoporosis---but had very healthy bones and still have very healthy bones. So don't freak out yet-----have another x-ray done somewhere else.
Good Luck.

You need to get your husband to his PCP to get further testing. It's possible that it's a tumor, but may just as likely be something else that's very treatable. The only way to know for sure is to get more tests, and it should be done soon. My father has been a practicing chiropractor for 42 years, and has had many instances in which he has diagnosed people with things that their PCP's have missed. These have ranged from broken bones to terminal cancer. I hope your husband is okay. Oh, you should encourage him to continue with chiropractic care along with anything the PCP recommends, as being in alignment will help his body deal with whatever treatment he needs. Good luck.

Dark spots, which usually look like holes, on bones in x-rays indicate tissue damage and/or cancerous lesions. If it's not due to an obvious injury, it could be malignant.

Go to the pcp. They should order specific chest x-rays, as the technique for chest and spine x-rays is different. Depending on the results of the x-rays, the radiologist may recommend a CT.

I know I will sound like a preacher but what will one minute of worry get you, longer life or a faster death. I know what do I know? That is what you think. My problem is not possibly cancer but my heart. The more you worry the more you lower you immune system, so think good thoughts and laugh a lot.
