Hello. I have 2 pitbull terriers. One is a female full Pitbull Terrier, the other is a male Boxer/Pitbull Terrier. I have always wanted a smaller dog to include in the family. They get a long great with smaller dogs, they've been socialized with my brother's Yorkie/Chihuahua mix. What do you recommend is the best small dog? I was considering one of the three: Chihuahua, MinPin, or Yorkie. Though a Yorkie may be too small, I think. Any ideas?

I'm amazed by the amount of answers in regards to pitbull aggression. Okay yeah I was wondering what type of dog I should get. I know I'm either getting a Chihuahua or a Miniature Pinscher. I adopted both Pitbulls from an adoption shelter. Both have had horrible past experiences. But in no way in the year that I've owned these two, (granted that's not enough time) have they shown any type of aggression toward anyone, small, medium or large. They are great around children, and both have been in obedience training with smaller dogs as well. I know they get along well with others, I take them to the dog park --- and their a hit with everyone. =) I think Pitbulls have earned a false rep -- they aren't fighters, at least not my 2. Unless you train them that way, they are very loving and caring breeds.

I dont think that you should be bringing any dog into this mix as everyone knows that pits are notorious for disliking other dogs and are dog agressive and if I were you I would not subject a small dog to this crowd as you are asking for trouble please do not do this as it may end very badly .

You should go with a dog that can match there energy. Something like a Bulldog (i have one) they are small and can keep up with the boxer/pittbull energy. I think sometimes the smaller dogs like a yorkie or a minpin etc could be seen as chew toys for the bigger dogs. I would stay aways from that type of breed. Good luck. I know a few breeders if you decide to go with the bulldog. !!

if you know anything about bigger dogs and pitbulls , you should know that you shouldnt leave your dogs alone unsupervised with other dogs, especially smaller ones. To get another dog you would need to take a lot of precautions.

Also just because one animal gets along with a couple of other animals doesnt mean that they will get along with all animals.

You might get another dog and be fine , but on the other hand your current dogs might not take to the new dog and an accident could occur .

that being said if you still wont change your mind i personally would go for the Chihuahua

I would be very careful about introducing a small dog into your family -- it is one thing to be good with your brother's dog who visits occasionally, and another to live with a much smaller bait/prey like dog, when they have the opportunity to be alone with itand it is stealing their toys or food, or your attention. It most likely can be done, but it will take work on your part.

Personally, I think all 3 of the breeds mentioned are too small to be safe and, please don't get me wrong -- I like pits and a Boxer/Pit would be a nice dog -- but they would only be doing what comes naturally if they chased the smaller dog and hurt it.

Sorry, just my opinion

hi there
i dont recommend you getting another dog since you have pitbulls as they lock their jaws when fighting if you get anything smaller than those dogs the smaller dog specialy a ***** trys to be come the boss the smaller the dog the bossier it becomes and i think you would have more than a fight on your hands i have 2 yorkies and a jack russell the small yorkie is the boss but when the jack has had enough of her she has a go
hope this has helped but dont want to put you off as i love dogs
cheers April

Don't listen to people about pitbulls being bad!!!! It is how you raise it!!!!! You said your have been around your brothers. Mine was with 3 little dogs & everything was good!! He NEVER did anything!!! I would go to your shelter & save one from there!!! I would look for a thicker one not a little one like a Chihuahua!! You should save a dog at the shelter!!!

I would not risk the life of a small dog with 2 pits- even if they're great with a family members little dog, they may not be great with a new one.

Pekingese are good with other dogs. They have a strong enough personality to hold their own with the big dogs, but are aware enough of their own size to not try and get into major fights with them. Mine does just fine with both our pitbull and our german shepard. if fact, she'd the only other dog that the german shepard seems to get along with.

i think a chihuahua is fine even though there are some breeds that grow more than the miniture toy. a yorkie is hard to maintain.

i like beagles myself, they are mellow dogs after a few years old . a lot of small dogs are high strung and can get on you ,and your dogs nerves i think.you could get a 12 inch tri color.they do have a tendency to catch a scent and run though.they really like rabbit hunting.
