Grocery codes (or farm labels) to identify the specific variety. In part, it is how the cashier knows how to ring your fruit. He/she may not be able to tell the difference between a Rome from a Red Delicious (for that matter, a mango from a papaya)

Jim G is right. All the time cashiers are checking the labels. In stores where there are two dozen kinds of apples--be glad for those labels--otherwise you might end up paying $3.99 a pound for an apple on sale for $.99 a pound.
Researchers are looking into laser etching labels onto the fruit. No more pesky stickers to peel off!
