I have had both hips replaced in separate surgeries several months apart.
It is a miraculous procedure and I hope you get the results that I got - which amounts to getting my life back!
The "shooting pains" that you refer to may not be all that unusual. I had similar pain on the inside of my thigh. My hips were all messed up, no cartilage, couldn't take a step without a cane.
You don't say how long you have to wait for the surgery but if the wait is long and the pain constant & debilitating, I suggest asking your OS for something to give you relief.
One of the "miracles" of the surgery is that the arthritic pain is gone immediately, to be replaced with the discomfort of the incision and some stretched muscles. Fortunately this kind of pain is well treated in the hospital and abates with time and healing and therapy. Good luck to you.

I am currently recovering from a hip replacement that took place on May 30th. I am still in some pain. The first few days were the worst. I am using a walker to get around but I can already tell a difference in the quality of the pain. I had a lot of groin area pain in the hip that was replaced before the surgery and I still have some pain now. Pain in the opposite area could be due to you favoring the bad leg. Think about it: you're basically walking crookedly. My PT said the groin pain is nerve pain. Try an ice pack. Here's a good home made one that my PT gave me: 16 oz. water, 8 oz. rubbing alcohol. Place inside gallon size freezer zip lock bag and then inside another gallon size freezer bag. Let it cool a few hours. The ice never really totally freezes, making it soft for sensitive stitches. Hope this helps!

My brother had one and it was excruciating pain as he healed - he had a double replacement and yes while you are waiting you will be in pain because you are favoring the other hip and putting more pressure on that leg and groin area. The first few days were really, really bad for him and then as he began physical therapy and the healing process the pain lessen and he is up and walking around and does not have that same stress or pain. It took a few weeks for him to bear up to the pain, you may be different and not in as much pain as he was in.

I chosen the epidural. No discomfort - and not even frightening - no longer on that plenty Valium! lol I awakened while the surgical treatment replaced into almost over - it provides a great tale to tell after. My mother had both replaced and my brother in law recently one side. He is happy he did and the procedure with follow up physical therapy is wonderful.

The pain after surgery is intense for one or two days but then there is no comparison to the pain before surgery.

Best you get it fixed before you are on hordes of drugs, hardly walking with two canes or in a wheelchair. Make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip replacement. There are several ways and kinds today and a good surgeon would select the best for you. Know that you will have at least two months recover away from work.
