honestly they all hurt no matter what but as far as which one hurts worst its the back especially on the spine i have wings on my upper back and it was not that bad just on the spine and close to the neck. also in my opinion don't get one on your upper arm unless its a sleeve or at least a half sleeve everybody has a tattoo on there arm its so generic just think would you think it is cooler to have one on your upper arm like everybody else or upper back which in my mind looks bad @$$ when it shows its worth the pain trust me it there forever!!

Both hurt. I recently got the outline for a piece that covers the outer part of my upper arm and wraps onto the top, back, and front of my shoulder. The parts on the back and top of my shoulder hurt the worst by far because the bone is closer to the skin there. Totally not looking forward to getting the shading and color done (another three hours!) but I already love the way it looks.
If you really want it, you're going to have to suffer a bit.

I think it hurts the most when its on a bone. Your upper arm shouldn't hurt as much especially if you don't go all the way around. But remember it really is just an irritating pain. So I would go with where you want to have it. It's going to be there forever but the pain wont last forever. Good luck!

General rule of thumb - the bonier the more it will hurt. But if you are tattooing areas with more nerve endings, it will hurt more too.
My own experience is that upper back is a piece of cake. Don't know about upper arm though.

It all depends on the person and their tolerance for pain. Some people say that, this or that place hurts more or less and I have heard that the more fatty it is the more it hurts. But everyone thinks differently about what they view as pain. So it all depends on person and if you are a wuss or not!

Depends on if you go all the way around the arm. The underside of my arm was REALLY tender...the top of my back didn't hurt so much

I have one on my upper back on my spine. Yes it hurt, but it was worth it. It vibrated on my spine and hurt really bad. The whole thing took forty five minutes. I'm glad I got it done though.

Arm is fine, back hurts bad. I wouldnt reccomend drinking a lot before you go either because it thins your blood and you will bleed a lot.

It shouldn't hurt that bad, the only place on my body I found super sensitive to tattoo was my inner wrist.

One has to suffer for ones art. My 61 year old wife has 4 tats, one in a very sensitive spot, she never even flinched.
