Putin is trying to re-ignite some Cold War rhetoric, but it's just rhetoric. MAD is still valid, the 'missle shield' in question would be like a parasol in a hailstorm as a defense against the massive Russian deterent forces - it might not even be that effective against the much smaller ballistic forces of the states like Iran that it's actually meant to defend against.

Don't believe that idiot on MNBC Keith Olberman he has no credentials when it comes to foreign affairs or the former Soviet Union/Russia. Putin has pushed back reforms since he has been in office making the new Russia more like the old USSR where even journalists are being killed when they speak out on subjects. Olberman is the vilest of journalists and has no idea how the Russians are being more and more anti west and want to again have their negative influence on Eastern Europe. It is a new Cold War and we need to watch the Russian government and its assistance to terrorist governments like Iran closely.

This is all posturing by Putin to divert the Russian peoples attention away from other domestic issues and make him look big, tough and important at home and on the world stage. The tougher he looks the more the hard-liners in Russia like it and he depends on their political support. The US has been planning this new defencive system for some years now so it was no big surprise.
