I heard that although butter has more calories and fat, it is better for you than margarine. Why?

I eat butter because butter is a real food. Margarine is made from hydrogenated vegetable oil.
1. Butter is a natural product. Alternatives are different.
2. All butter is made with cream. The ingredients of margarine are varied in individual brands.
3. Butter is a healthful food. There is no evidence to the contrary.
4. Butter has been in the diet for thousands of years so you can have confidence in it.
5. Butter is no more fattening than margarine. This is an important point. The advertising of margarine has been so powerful and misleading that it is surprising how many people still think margarine has fewer calories than butter. Again, the fat content of butter and margarine are identical.
6. Fats are important in a well-balanced diet.

Butter is from the fat of cows milk (therefore, you are getting all sorts of unnecessary hormones, antibiotics and animal fat).
Margarine is made of a mix of oils, usually hydrogenated ones (which is not good for you either).
But now there are some companies that are making margarine without hydrogenated oils and no trans fat. The Oils they use is higher quality and the oils that makes the margarine hard is either coconut oil, or palm oil. This oils are hard by nature, they do not need to be hydrogenated to become hard at room temperature like other oils in regular margarine have. Some people fear coconut oil, but actually they are really good for you (you can find out more if you do search). Of course, don't abuse it either, like anything in this live... What is good use it moderately, and what is bad, keep it away from you.
The brands of margarine that are better out there is called: Smart Balance and Soy Garden.

Hope this helps! :)

All fats have the name number of calories per gram, they are both pure fat so same number of calories, just different types of fats. Butter tastes better, that is for sure. I limit my butter consumption (mainly for corn and toast) and consume almost no margarine (I think my girlfriend uses it when she cooks certain things).
