Good question. I've been wondering the same thing. I think it has to do with them thinking their god (or perception of god) is the only one and their religion is allegedly truth. The second a person closes his/her eyes like that is the moment they become intolerant of everyone else.

Because some simple minded Christians think their religion is the only way. My dad is like that. Except with him it's not Christianity, to him his religion is the only one.

Try living in a region that is predominantly mormon when you yourself are not and don't even GO to church, christian or otherwise. They are pretty good friends though...
