Can an open atheist become president? Probably Bin Laden running on a "Kill all Americans and burn all American flags" platform has a better chance. Should one? Sure, if he/she is qualified.

There have been some, but in the current climate of borderline religious hysteria in the US, it is doubtful. An Atheist would have to avoid the subject until elected. Then BAN religion completely. *jk

No. The fundies have too much control over the US. Yes, the President should be Atheist in a country that says it supports freedom for all when the religious fundies don't support freedom at all.

I think most of them really are Atheists but just pretend to have a religion because it's the socially acceptable thing to do and the way to win votes. I think belief or non-belief in deity has NO PLACE in politics. Basically - that's something that needs to be kept to oneself and a personal belief in deity should not be used as a base for decisions effecting everyone.

He would have to win the election without Texas, as its illegal in Texas for an atheist to run for office, according to our constitution. It does say that the person running can not be required to belong to a particular religion, but that the individual must believe in God.

1) not currently..too many Christians out there spreading lies about us and our lack of morals
2)An Atheist, christian,Muslim, etc. Should NOT become president for their belief or lack thereof. The president should be someone who has a workable plan, and the nuts to make it happen

We've had Deists, Free Masons, Unitarians, Agnostics and even one who was an Atheist, at least at the time of the election.
So there have been many non-Christians who have occupied the White House.

It would be the best thing for the US, which is heading back to the Dark Ages after two terms of that Hitler-like jesus-freak Bush. The US needs a breath of clean air. The education system is falling apart under this facist religious regime, and as far as I know it was pretty shaky to begin with.

Now? I don't think so. The religious right is too entrenched. Maybe in time. Religion (or lack of it) doesn't matter to me, so as long as the Atheist in question was qualified, intelligent, and a good leader, I'd vote for him or her.
