Actually, no -- not by itself.

It has to be 100 proof to ignite in its own. 80 proof is technically not flammable. That was the original definition of 100 proof -- if you could hold a match to the surface of the booze and it ignited, then it was 100 proof (or greater). By adding more and more water to the booze, and lighting it, at some point you could no longer light it, then it was 99 proof.

Now... that said -- if you cook with something less than 100 proof (even Sherry at 20 proof), it is the heated alcohol vapors and air that ignite above the pan, not the liquor itself.

yes... assuming the whiskey is at least 80 proof.

General rule of thumb is "80 proof or higher" is used in flambe dishes. That's 40% alcohol.

Also, alcohol flames are almost invisible to the eye, but you can feel the heat and the other volatiles burning off with the alcohol make it visible.

Every alcohol drink will NOT flame up. Wine and beer will not since the alcohol conent is low at about 10%.

Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, drinking alcohol or grain alcohol, is a flammable, colorless, slightly toxic chemical compound with a distinctive perfume-like odor, and is best known as the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.

Alcohol is flammable (so flammable that it can be used as a fuel).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drinks with a concentration of more than 50% ethanol by volume (100 proof) are flammable liquids and easily ignited.

Hope I helped!

Only if it is over 100 proof. A liquor must be over 100 proof to be flammable.
