When we go for a walk he'll sniff around forever and then he'll come to a spot and rub his face all over it. What does this mean?

Hound dogs have very sinsitive noses, and for some reason they like to rub on smelly things. He could be sniffing out the smelly thing and once he finds it he rubs on it.
Also dogs just like to smell when they walk to see who all or what all has been there.

It's a territory thing- he is trying to rub his scent all over the spot to drown out the scent of whatever dog was there first. Consider yourself lucky- he could be dragging his bum all over the spot instead!!!

could be him looking for something basset hounds look around and smell the ground alot but the rubbing could just be his favorite spot to scratch try walking him somewhere else and see if it happens hope this helps

He is looking for were another dog pee'd.... sounds yucky but they do that!!! He is rubbing the other sent on himself. I had a male dog that loved to rub himself on dead things, when we'd go camping!!! Just don't let him stop when you are walking. You should make him pay att to you, not his nose!!!! Good luck

it means he loves the smell of whatever it is and wants to use it as cologne. i've taken care of a lot of dogs and there was this one who would look for something stinky while on a walk and then would rub her face all over it . . . for example, a discarded piece of fish or something. it's quite strange . . . i actually find it annoying because you will then have to deal with whatever stinky substance that is now on your dog.
