I think it depends on how close you feel towards him. If it were my nephew, I think $100 is sufficient. More if you were closer.

Give him the same amount of money as you would for a wedding gift. The amount ranges so widely depending on standard of living in different areas, that there is no way to just give you a number.
For example, where I live, grandparents will usually give about $50 to $75 for a grandchild's graduation. Aunts & Uncles, $25-$50. Neighbors, friends, etc., range from $10-$20.
To others who have answered this question, that seems grossly cheap. But it really all just depends on where you live and how much you can afford. Also, how many gifts you have to give plays a factor. In small families & small social circles, you may have only 1 or 2 parties to attend a year. This year, I had 14 parties to attend.
There are just too many variables to give a generic answer. Give what you want to give.

I understand your problem, I thought of the same thing last Saturday when my nephew graduated. I did not give him a large sum of money, but he was happy for the gift anyway. I guess I´m not a good adviser, but there is no standard. All is up to what you think is right, perhaps you should not give so much cash now, but you could promise him, in some way or the other, to help him financially (or some other help). To give a large sum of money can easily be wasted to other things than university studies.Perhaps your nephew is a smart boy and understands the value of money, but think it over. I´m sure you will come to the right conclusion. Congratulations to your nephew and good luck with your decision. Regards from a person from the "other side of the world.

If you can afford it I would say 100 cash and then find out if there is a walmart or target close to his university and give him a $100 gift card to there for emergency needs.

I'm going to my niece's graduation tonight in fact and was wondering the same thing. Looks like $50-100 is average.
That much will add up fast when all the aunts and uncles and grandparents start dropping by the house.

I am flat broke (and in my mid thirties) and I am giving my cousin $150.
I would say that an above average gift would be $300-500.
For my college graduation a few years ago, my father gave me $1000, just to give you an idea of ranges (he could afford it).
I also think you should go to Things Remembered and get him a little keepsake (even a little keychain or a money clip) to go with your gift. :) The money will be gone too soon. :)
Good luck! :)

My grandmother gave her friend's son $100 when he graduated from high school. And she's only met him like once so with this being your nephew I would give more than that if possible

Average I received was $50, unless you're really close to him then $100 maybe the answer.
