If i wear a sunscreen lotion and then go out in the sun to tan, i know i will get the tan, but it'll just take longer to get it versus if i didn't have any sunscreen on...but doesn't that defeat the purpose? can't i just go out in the sun with no sunscreen, stay a shorter time in the sun, and get the tan?

Well, because of the hole in the ozone layer, just being out there for like 15 minutes can leave you with a pretty decent sunburn instead of a tan, whereas a nice SPF 15 sunscreen can block the harmful UV rays while still letting enough in to tan you. It's like the difference between slow-roasting a turkey in an oven for 5 hours and microwaving one for like an hour and a half. In the end, both turkeys are cooked through, but one is succulent and golden-brown and delicious, while the other one is leathery and scorched and tastes like crap. Sorry, that's the best analogy I could come up with.

Sunscreen prevents you from burning not tanning. And tanning has nothing to do with the sunscreen, it has to do with how well your skin retains the pigment.

Also, sunscreen prevents you from getting skin cancer from the harmful UV rays and cooking yourself under the sun, because that's basically what your doing is allowing your skin to bake.

Sunscreen allows you to tan through but it will take longer to burn based on the sunscreen factor. Also, if you swim with your sunscreen on you need to reapply after. Sunscreen lets you enjoy the weather, sun, etc... It will also help prevent you from getting skin cancer.

Yes you can but personally, I have found the best thing to be Hawaiian Tropic lotion or oil. They have spf 4 or 7 depending on which you get which is still low enough to get a good tan but enough protection to keep from burning. Burning is the worst b/c it takes your skin twice as long to recover. Anyway, I just keep on applying that stuff about every 15 minutes and I get brown really quickly.

To prevent yourself from burning in the process would seem like the most logical answer.

But yes, it does defeat the object......that you are trying protect your skin with sunblock and then roasting your skin with damaging UV rays which cause premature ageing and skin cancer. Sorry to be blunt.

sunblock blocks out the harmful UV rays the sun gives off. Those rays attribute to skin cancer and who wants that. better safe than sorry my dear.
