I think sometimes they're trying to smell if other dogs have peed there. It's a territorial thing. If they do smell another dog, they pee over it to cover it up with their own scent. Also, I think dogs are tracking smaller animals like squirrels and bunnies when they sniff like that. My bulldog Manny will always go right up to bushes around our apartment complex and sniff for a long time, like he cam maybe smell the scent of other animals. It makes sense because we do live in an area that is heavily populated with bunnies and squirrels and he adores chasing them. Oh, and also, if you live in an area where people eat things and barbecue, etc. on the grassy areas, he could be smelling that, too- old meat.

Dogs use their noses to tell them EVERYTHING. When they are sniffing, they are often sniffing where other dogs went to the bathroom. Their pee and poop is like their introduction 'Hi, I'm a 4 year old unfixed male collie in good health'. When they take forever sniffing, just think of it this way- they're reading the autobiographies of every dog that's been through there. When they sniff then pee they're saying' Yah, nice Mr. Collie, but this is MY space'. The peeing is marking for territory, the sniffing to get inof about other animals in the area.

Everything that matters to them. We can't possibly understand their sense of smell. They are just checking out the yard. When we take our German Shepherd outside the yard for a walk, he has to smell everything. Our Westies, not so much.

They can smell other animals have been there . When they sniff and then pee they are "marking" their spot.

scents! they're sniffing anything that's new around his/her area. its kinda like owning the place and yu'd like to know who's been hanging around ur block. that kind of sniffing is normal. its either they smell a cat nearby or left scents of other dogs walking with their owners and / or hidden bunnies under the ground!
