Your dog may have torn a tendon to his back leg. That is what happened to my dog several years ago.

I took him to the vet. The vet surgically repaired the tendon and that took care of the problem.

Twelve years of age is fairly old for a dog, and most dogs have difficulty with their legs if they live long enough. The legs start to drag because the spinal nerves deteriorate, which prevents nerve impulses from making it all the way to the extremities. Unfortunately, this is part of the aging process in dogs, and there isn't anything that can be done. The good thing is that dogs also lose their ability to sense pain in the extremities, so dogs usually don't perceive any problem, and they keep on going like nothing is wrong.

What can it be? A question you should be posting in the Dogs section of the Pets category.

He might have broken it or it might be a symptom for something else so you should take him to the vet.

he could have arthritis in it or maybe he hurt it somehow, you should take him to your vet to be sure. If you wait it could get worse and turn into something bigger

please take him to a vet asap. shepards are prone to hip dysplasia but it could be as simple as arthritis in light of his age.
