I not sure a high death toll was their ultimate goal - terror and destruction, yes. Even the terrorists couldn't guarantee the towers would fall, so they were probably happy just to hit the right building. And with all the other tall skyscrapers around there, they probably couldn't aim too low without risking hitting another buiding.... they were flying really fast, and were very inexperienced pilots, so they couldn't cut it too close.

The deathtoll was not their goal; fear was. Furthermore, had the planes crashed lower, someone might have noticed that these weren't your everyday passenger planes.

There is a limit as to how low you can go because of the neighboring buildings. There is also the issue of what is going on in the cockpit during the final minutes.

As a retired professional pilot, I can assure you they were more concerned about hitting those buildings AT ALL....much less WHERE they hit them. These were novice pilots moving in excess of 600 MPH.

Well it wasn't like they were professional pilots or anything. They also had a bit of stress going on at the time.

Yes, I suppose it those flying the plane had been sane, rational individuals, they might have aimed lower. (/sarcasm)
