It was in fact used by first century christians, but then so was everything culturally available to them. There is much evidence that it predates christaianity and is an artifact of mithraism.

The early christians would certainly have been attracted to the symbolism of the sower, which Jesus used in a favorite teaching story. He was possibly referring to the rotas which everyone in his audience recognized.
