My ex died in California on Aug. 12, 2005, his name was Gregory Allen Porter, born June 15, 1951. I have not heard from him in several years and cannot locate any of his family to find out info on how, where, etc. he died. I have found his name in SS death index but would love to know what happened to cause him to die or even an obituary. I have searched the net for obits but have not found anything. His last place of residence was Escondido, CA. His parents were Otis and Nellie Porter. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Try the message board on Rootsweb. Choose U. S., then California, then the county that Escondido is in. Sometimes there are people who monitor the boards and will help. It is called RAOGK. Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness.
Rootsweb does not require a subscription. When you put a message on Rootsweb's message board, it will automatically go on Ancestry.Com's message board.
Also you can do the same for Genealogy.Com. I don't believe posting on the message board requires a subscription.

Fill in the information and wait. If he died in Escondido and there is an obituary they will mail it to you for free. I have used this service before and it has worked beautifully!
Keep in mind though that just because the SSDI lists his "last residence" as Escondido, doesn't mean necessarily that it was. On occasion I have found the last residence information to be incorrect, but that shouldn't stop you from at least trying this. Good luck and I hope this link to the library will help you out. Are his parents still alive and if so, where did they live in August of 2005. I looked for your ex-husband's obituary in the newspaper for the Escondido CA area but his was not printed in there. Perhaps he was buried and had an obituary in another area?...that is why I was wondering where his parents are...maybe they had an obituary placed in a newspaper where they live (assuming they did not live near their son).
When you looked up your ex-husband's social security number and saw what you did, is this where you got the "Escondido" information from?

without finding him.
Not everyone gets an obit. The family may not have wanted to pay for it, or they may have been private people. I'm sorry.

You will not find obituaries online.
Go to the public library in your city and ask the libriarian to help you search for him in the newspaper obituary for the city in California you need.
