As a physician I wish that diphenhydramine/Benadryl were not available in oral form so I would certainly not recommend it. It has the worst side effect profile of all of the available anti-histamines but is not more efficacious. Loratadine is sold over-the-counter as Claritin and Alavert. It is perfectly OK but many people require 20 rather than 10 mg daily for it to be effective. Desloratadine/Clarinex is the active part of loratadine but is available only by prescription. Cetirizine/Zyrtec is another prescription which is more sedating than loratadine but not more effective. If I were to take an anti-histamine it would be fexofenadine/Allegra 180 mg daily. There is nothing more effective and it is the least sedating but again it does require a prescription. If you are looking for an over-the-counter anti-histamine loratadine is your best bet. If you are wanting the best agent to treat hay fever I would suggest a nasal corticosteroid rather than an oral anti-histamine. These are prescription only and they are expensive, but they are the most effective with the least side effects.

Loratadine is Claritin.

It depends on the person. Benedryl actually works the best but it has several side effects including muscle fatigue and drowsiness. I use Zyrtec because Claritin doesn't work well for me. I take Benedryl at night.

But what really works best for me is taking both Zyrtec and Singulair. Singulair is now approved for people suffering from seasonal allergies.

I would have to say that both Clarityn and Benadryl are good for hayfever.

Yes it is safe to do this occasionally most of the sleeping preparations for sale in the pharmacy have an antihistamine as the active ingredient.

I've found ZYRTEC to work very well and my allergies are so bad I cannot function without it....NASONEX also works wonders.
