Absolutely, if there are songs that are special to you and your mate, then request for those songs to be played. Our DJ had us make a few lists - "songs to NOT play", "songs to DEFINITELY play", and "songs that MEAN something to us as a couple". He listened to each of our requests and it was an amazing day. Just find someone trustworthy to run the show, give your input, and relax! :)

It looks like you asked how many songs do you personally pick. You can do as many or as few as you like. For me, I despise those same ol Ode to Joy, Man's Desiring, it's just so...typically overdone.

I picked every single song that played at the wedding. The prelude, the seating of the mothers and grandmothers, bridesmaids, my march, the lighting of the unity candle, the processional I did use the traditional Mendelssohn. Then at the reception I had a list of Do Play and Do Not Play.

I had picked a song for our first, father-daughter. My groom picked mother-son song. I picked the song for the opening up, everyone come to the dance floor. Many weddings have extra songs based on extended families--bride with stepfather or bride and groom with their children. Many brides pick the cake cutting song, a song for the bouquet toss (i picked Single by Natasha Bennington), garter toss, and exit song (I tried to pick that but we couldn't find an instrumental version of it.

But you can not dictate and go with the flow as well. It's completely up to you.

I have always thought Kenny G in the background is a nice addition to the atmosphere
