It is US policy that any POW that escapes or is Repatriated, will not be returned to combat in the same theater of conflict.
In WWII this meant someone escaping capture in Europe, could be sent to Pacific theater of operations.

Yes.

However, that was not to reward the guy for escaping. It was to prevent him from being captured again and tortured into revealing who the local citizens were that helped him escape.

Chuck Yeager was one of the first to be allowed to return to combat in the same theater of war as the allies had already invaded France and the issue was no longer a concern.

They were not required to return to combat. They could Volunteer.
