You have large cartilage under the bursa (knee-cap) of your knee. This could be torn, mine was. It could be one of several smaller cartilages that tore, Think about it, what did you do that may have felt like something ripped or tore, It might not have hurt right away.
I just had surgery on both my knees for this, I'm a contractor and was on my knees a lot laying tile.

They usually go in there with a arthroscope, your asleep, it has a small camera on the end, they're able to see what's wrong and, believe this or not, they go in and sew up the damage without cutting you wide open, they use the little holes from the camera. Usually four to five stitches in each hole. Nothing to it. They can scrape the knees if necessary from here also.

For now, try ice packs. Take Ibuprofen.

It could be from something that happened a long time ago and now arthritis has set in. I'm 55 and have had my right knee replaced. I'm not suggesting that you might need that, your way too young. I was 49 when I had it done and that was after 10 years of living with pain. It all just depends. You should see an orthopedic doctor.

This sounds as though it may be a problem with the tendon which runs under the knee cap, or perhaps with the ligaments which hold the bones together. Have you been seen by a physiotherapist? They might be able to help. You might be able to have an arthroscopy, which involves putting a little camera inside your knee to look around (under general anaesthetic). Have you had blood tests for arthritis? Those might also be helpful. Good luck with it.
