Shure 57 or 58 is time tested , road-worthy, and affordable.

The Sure SM-58 or SM-58 Beta are the most reliable, even after all these years. However, my personal favorite mic to use is a Sennheiser e835, it sounds great and is just as durable as the Sures. AKG also puts out some quality mics, but for the price stick with Sure or Sennheiser.

A shure sm-57(about $99) (Micheal Jackson used it in thriller) or SM-58 should do you fine. It will work for both live and studio applications. If you want good clarity in the studio at an affordable price, try a 20/20 by audio technica or a KSM27 (roughly $350) by shure. If you want top of the line though, you can always go for a Neumann ($2999 at musiciansfriend.com), which will catch every idiosyncracy.
