Unless a religion is teaching said Universal Truth, I agree with you. False religion serves no constructive purpose.
However, God has ALWAYS interacted with man through representatives who had authority to do so. Therefore, I believe that eschewing all religion in favor of one's own personal philosophy is an equally egregious mistake as following a false religion would be.

That's an incredibly broad statement that you make, and one not universally reiterated among contemporary philosophers. I would direct you to the writings of Jacques Derrida for a full treatment of 'Absolute Truth' as a social construct rather than an analytical reality.
The problem with claiming any sort of of Absolute Truth is that any such truth-statement is necessarily accompanied by a particular absolute worldview, to the exclusion of all others. The notion of a single worldview as pre-eminent over all others and able to fully describe 'the real' is reductionist (at best), and otherwise an Enlightenment conceit.
So far as religion is concerned, I would beg to distinguish 'religion,' as a behavior and a mystical practice, from 'theology,' the pseudo-scientific attempt made by some theists to translate mystical experience into codified statements of a logical and analytical sort. When do Richard Dawkins and the Dalai Lama agree? When they say this can't be done!
Religion as a behavior retains value in the (post)modern world as a tool for allowing individuals to experience the 'catharsis' described by Aristotle as arising from active participation in mythic drama. The goal, as laid out in Aristotle's 'Poetics,' is to purge pity and terror with pity and terror. This process elevates the human mind in much the same way as great literature, poetry, and theater- by acting as a mirror of the devotee's own psyche, allowing them to examine it's processes in an external form.
On the matter of religion and truth, I appeal to the Classical Pagan understanding of religion as function of theater and poetry, rather than a collection of dogma and dubious historical claims. Poetry is inherently non-rational, but it serves a purpose beyond rational interpretation and beyond mere entertainment. I would contend that religion is as true as a well-crafted poem, which is not same sort of absolutist truth that most religious folk (or atheists, for that matter), generally associate with religion.
It is for this reason that, depending on the context in which they are applied, I can accept both atheism and religious mysticism as 'true.' No capital T's. When I wish to describe human DNA, I will of course speak from a naturalistic perspective. If however, I wish to speak on the substance and character of mystical experience, I will be approaching the matter from a religious standpoint.
I realize that my opinions are sharply divergent from the vast majority of religious people, but I hope they will be considered on their own merits.
