I live in shanghai china now. I can speak and love studying Chinese but i can't stand those people who love studying English. One of the nicer names of these types of people is "English imperialist" you speak to them in Chinese and they respond to you in very (often very bad) bad English. More or less, over here they expect foreign to not be able to speak Chinese and a lot of times are happen when they can't.

I guess I could understand why, for one find a better job if they have good spoken English, 2 its a fad, your that much cooler if you can speak English, and 3 most people have studied it for so long (10 years or more, the rich ones start when they are in pre-school) so why not give it a try.

But frankly i find this very annoying and rude, after all I’m here to learn Chinese. (Please keep in mind i like china a lot, I’m just bitter at the moment )
what’s the English like in Korea and Japan? are you expected to not be able to speak the language? English imperialist? THANKS!

English is the language of money and big business - international trade.

I think you'll find the same trend in the big cities in Korea and Japan.

Also, you've answered your own question with your reasons... They've spent years studying English and you are an English speaker. They want to practice their English.

Why don't you make it a win-win situation where you only speak to them in Chinese (and correct their bad English in Chinese - not to be consfused with the 80's "rock" band).

The irony here is that typically in the USA. Americans want foreigners to learn English and in China they want to learn English, but you want them to speak Chinese.

If you really want to pick up the language, move out of the city and go rural.

What the individuals above have mentioned approximately Korea is rather real. It's now not all doom and gloom right here however the dangerous manners and egocentric blanket mentality begin to get you down after the honeymoon interval is over. The pupils are very adorable and pleasing but in addition very noisy and tremendously impolite. I've heard that during Japan the pupils are a lot more obedient. A lot of Koreans are xenophobic in an blameless ancient normal kind of manner however it grates after now not very lengthy right here. A lot of Koreans also are very keen on foreigners and regard us as celebrities, that's a little overkill, however now not disagreeable. It particularly differs. Japanese individuals are a little extra 'with it' and despite the fact that typically extra accepting of foreigners they're additionally extra detached to them. They do not stare at you favor Koreans do which, incidentally, is among the so much frustrating matters approximately Korea. For tradition Japan wins palms down. It's on a utterly specific degree. I do not particularly know the way to outline Korean tradition rather than it being a blend of Japanese/Chinese hand-me-downs. The meals isn't for every person despite the fact that I rather adore it. Japanese meals is typically extra palatable. The Japanese have a ways greater desk manners. Koreans will shout around the desk with a mouth stuffed with meals. It's rather disgusting. Moneywise, I consider if you happen to land a well process in Japan you can earn greater cash however dwelling bills will also be extra there. @CSS. I recognise younger individuals right here that consume puppy.

To speak English opens the World to you. To refuse to speak English is childish & plain silly because like it or not, English has become the international language. As to Korea & Japan, yes most of the educated people in both countries speak English & the numbers are increasing. Chuckle, I have at times refused to speak English to loud mouthed & obnoxious tourists, although I am an American.
80-85% of all scientific papers are in English & this makes a huge impact on the civilized world because most of our scientific advances in the past 300 yrs have come from the West... the majority of that from English speaking countries.
If you have not visited Korea or Japan, I encourage you to do so. I found living in both countries to be rewarding but was dismayed at the amount of outright racism ingrained in Asian Cultures.

Well, I do not know about Japan and Korea but the situation is very much the same in India. People take pride speaking in English leaving their own mother tongue or mix English everywhere in their language. at times it becomes very funny. Example. My high blood pressure is very high now-a-days.
