Ah, the spiritual need to reduce women who have not gotten any to chattle. Gotta love a God like that, no?

*sigh*

Matthew 25

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

1"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

6"At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'

7"Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'

9" 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'

10"But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

11"Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'

12"But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'

13"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

If you read the whole parable Jesus is saying to be ready, watch.

We are the bride, Jesus is the Bridegroom.
Only the Father knows when He will send Jesus to get His bride.

It's a parable. You have to read the whole thing -- the girls are waiting with the bride for the bridegroom. The bridegroom would come unexpectedly, so the girls needed to be ready with plenty of oil for their lamps. Some girls brought plenty of oil, but others were running out. The five that had oil couldn't share with the five who didn't because they'd run out too. So -- the meaning as I interpret it is that you should be prepared, just like the Boy Scouts.

The whole point of the proverb, which should be abundantly clear to anyone who's taken the time to read the whole thing (rather than just the first sentence) is that one should always be ready for the kingdom of heaven because no one knows when it will come and they will be held accountable for their actions. A perfect example why many skeptics, when they take verses in the bible at face value, are ill-equipped to do biblical exegesis.

The significance of this parable was not the virginity of the women. This would be assumed since they were going to be married. The crux of the matter was that first they were happily anticipating his coming and second that they were prepared for it.
