Yorkshire Terrier Exercise

Many people are of the opinion that a Yorkshire terrier is a yappy little 'lap dog', quite content to be trained for the litter tray. Very wrong! As a true terrier, and robust little breed, the Yorkie requires as much exercise as any other small dog.

Whilst fully appreciating the fact that the Yorkie doesn't require lengthy periods of brisk walks (miles long!) , as would a large breed, it really does need a regular routine of good walks, preferably on the lead. A Yorkie can often 'walk YOUR legs off', never mind its own! Good exercise promotes good health. A Yorkie is no 'sissy'; don't ever underestimate his power and strength. When it rains, your Yorkie may not be too keen on the idea of getting wet ... but, never forget, nature has provided a substantial coat for this very reason. A Yorkie can return from a good 'wet' walk, looking like a drowned floor-mop, but all he will ever need is a good drying with a warm soft towel.

Exercise your Yorkie at least twice a day, come rain or come shine. He will grow to be fit and healthy ... and nagging little illnesses will seem less likely to afflict him.

It depends on the size, age, and activity level of your yorkie. Ask your vet for advice if you're unsure about how much exercise your yorkie needs.

A good way to figure out how much exercise he needs is to take him for a walk, and see when he gets tired. Its really that simple. I walk my 12 1/2 week old, 2 pound yorkie puppy 2-3 times a day, and he gets tired after a few blocks each time. When I can tell he's tired (he stands up on his back legs and paws at my legs) I pick him up and carry him the rest of the way. In addition to that, its important to get down and play with them: catch, fetch, training, etc.

Good exercise helps a lot with behavior issues and hyperactivity associated with yorkies.

Any dog needs about two hours at least. If i were you i would walk it on the lead in a morning as this provides mental exercise for the dog as well as physical, and then in the afternoon take it somewhere were it can be let off the lead and run its self silly, that is if you are able to let it off the lead and have a good recall. hope this helps, also the lead walking strengthens the bond between owner and dog so it is important to give it a bit of both.

I have three little yorkies. They need to run and chase.. so I would say a good 40-45 minute run either on the lead or off.. then play with your yorkie for another hour or so till he/she is panting..

I get mine all puffed out playing squeeky.. a little newspaper that squeaks.. when I say play they all run around to find it.. they love to hide and seek.. mine have different traits.

Rocky is like Garfield.. but very laid back.. perfect in everyway. I used to take him to an old folks home when he was a puppy and he loved being petted.
Maxwell can sniff out his squeeky toy or ball anywhere it has been put. I have never seen anything like it.
Henry has the smartest hearing..when a phone rings he jumps on me.. he should have been a hearing dog.

I love yorkies..
