Absolutely !! They've survived reviews by the Supreme Courts of the States that have implemented them !!

Just FYI, in California a ticket is maximum $20 for first offense... and in TEXAS it's a maximum $200 for the first offense !!

I love seeing the Anti-seat-belt crowd saying how "California's road death rate still climbs despite the law"... and they conveniently forget to note that it dropped quite abit when instituted, and NOW climbs at the rate of new drivers on the road.

Oh, I watched a gal in Illinois roll her car 6 times at 55mph in a rain-storm... and by the time I'd stopped to render assistance, she was out of her car calling for the police. She'd been wearing her seat belt and was just dazed... but the book-bag in the passenger-seat was spread out over 50 yards of the freeway shoulder.

While I wear a seat belt, I do not think it is the place of a government to tell an adult to do so. Safety is important, but there are risks in everyday life. People should be able to choose the amount of risk they are willing to take.

People fall down stairs every day, should we require anyone on a staircase to wear padding and a helmet? Speed increases the damage and injuries in a collision, should we set the speed limit to 5 mph? There is a chance you can get an electrical shock when you plug in a light, should we require that you have OSHA approved gloves?

Tell the government nannies to go away, and let adults make their own choices!!!

from someone old who has seen too many results of accidents where people have not worn seatbelts. with skydiving you will hit the ground and kill yourself if your shute doesn't open -blame yourself you should have been more careful folding your shute, bungee jumping - you chose to jump no one pushes you, your decision and your choice to jump at a place you trust to have a rope that will pull you up before you hit the ground and go splat, rock climbing and down hill skiing although you can hurt others it is not as common as car accidents mainly because there are not as many skiers on the slopes as cars on the roads. You can still die in all these though. But Motorbikes- to use a seatbelt you would be trapped, strapped to the bike and therefore in imminent danger of increased injury to your lower body which even without a seatbelt is often dragged alone the ground/road and the flesh on the legs degloved or burnt from the exhaust pipe. If thrown from the bike the possibility of head injury is high, even with a helmet. Seat belts in cars save a great many lives although there are still some horrendous accidents. The laws are made on research of how many lives are saved or lost in driving cars and being a passenger. to answer your question as to why you should wear a seatbelt can I suggest you visit an emergency department of a hospital on a saturday night or in the early hours of a sunday morning and see the results of what happens when no seat belts are worn the other place to visit is the orthopaedic ward of a hospital. You must be young as it is only the young who are invincible and don't value life. As you get older and have the responsibility for another usually younger lifes your attitude changes. When you have lost people close to you for the sole reason that the car skidded, or was hit and the driver/passenger hit the dash with such force they are left with permanent brain damage or dead you don't think twice about putting on a seat belt you encourage others to do so as well. If you die you do not have to cope with the people, family and friends left to grieve and cope without a dearly loved person. Is it a stupid law? when you can tell me how many lives have been saved by wearing seatbelts and how many lost and look at the people who daily are hurt bad enought to be hospitalised and worse then you canspeak from experience or at least research. you ask does the law make sense? My question to you, is is it sensible to allow people to go out onto the road to kill themselves or others? We don't allow peole to shoot each other but we put inexperienced people behind the wheel of a car and tell them it is ok to go as fast as they can and possibly kill themselves or others without thought. Please don't wear a seatbelt because you have to wear it, wear it because there are people out there who care about you and want to see you have a life that is full of promise not a life cut short or disabled.

NO, I don't think they should be legal. A person should choose theirself if they want to die or be saved by a seat belt. In some states, it's not required to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle. Those people can die just as easy, if not easier than a person in a car not wearing a seatbelt. Can we say double standard?

I honestly think it is a violation of my constitutional rights, If I do not want to wear a devise that restrains me to my vehicle I should not be made to. Some may not feel that the seat belt is a life saver but more of a death trap, there are studies that go both ways, so it should be a personal choice not a forced choice...

I think children should be restrained in carseats. On the other hand, I think adults should be able to make their own decisions. Motorcycle riders can decide whether to wear a helmet, why can they force us to wear seatbelts?
