a manual trans can last the life of a car, with occasional clutch replacements and lube oil changes. an automatic might if fluid services are kept up and load- tow limits are not exceeded.maybe. [i also have a 1989 240 wagon it has 225k miles and shifts ok but id rather drive my 79 245 with 4spd or daughters 79 242 manual w / od.[if it ever goes there will be a manual in store for the 89] good luck

Hi

In principle, a well looked after manual gearbox should last longer than an auto one, just because it's simpler technlogy with fewer bits to go wrong...HOWEVER - reading between the lines, if you're asking "buying used, which is likely to be the safer purchase" then an automatic would be the way to go.

The reason is - someone using a manual gearbox badly (riding the clutch, not changing the oil sufficiently frequently, treating it too harshly) will reduce its lifespan, however there is not as much that one can do to an automatic gearbox to mess it up.

So - if your question is "which is the safer buy on an older Volvo" then the auto would be - however the 240 is quite an old vehicle now and in general it is wiser to buy older cars on "condition, not specification" - therefore if you see a lovely, well maintained manual I'd take it over a poorly looked-after auto.

Good luck with your car!

They both can last long if fluid changes are kept up. If u decide to get a manual trans. i highly recommend the trans. model with a 5 speed versus the 4 speed with the overdrive button on the knob. Also be skeptical if the car has a trailer hitch on it. That puts a lot of abuse on an automatic trans.

The more important factor is the history of maintenance of the car. Both auto and manual transmission models can last long if they've been cared for.

That said, I would concur that the auto tranny is probably more idiot-proofed (less vulnerable to poor maintenance) than a manual gearbox equipped counterpart if you're looking at a used vehicle.

Probably a manual. It will depend on how you keep up on the
maintenence. Maintain either one properly and it will last a long time.;

Usually manual transmissions tend to last longer than automatics, it all depends on how you maintain your vehicle

I have had both......I am not a big fan of a manual trans. anymore, too much shifting and I always ride the clutch till it breaks......

both are good transmissions. My experience shows the autos are better as long as the fluids have been changed.
