I like them both, but I lean towards cats. The thing is that who never had a cat has no idea of how much affectionate a cat can be. We recently got a kitten and my husband wasn't interested, he was always the dog kind, he just did it for me. When we go the kitten, she was 8 weeks old, my husband went completely crazy about her. She plays a lot, she's very social and likes to be around people, she even comes to the door when we come home!
Overall, a cat can take care of itself easily, it doesn't stink (it might sound mean, but I find dogs smell unbearable, although I like them). Cats also learn easily how to use the litter box, you don't have to walk them out in the cold/extremely hot weather, etc. and it gives you the same love that a dog can give. Believe me, people who don't like cats is because they never had the chance to live with one.

if you want a independent animal that doesn't care what you do, and is extremely pushy when they want to be. choose a cat. it will do as it wishes, and will have little interest in trying to impress you at all. a dog on the other hand is going to be a life long companion, that will want all the love and attention that you can spare, and will go out of there way to impress you (not just trip you when you are carrying groceries) . obviously i'm a dog person. but the fact still stands that a cat does as it pleases.

First of all, dogs can be as lazy as cats AND shed as much if not more (my one cat barely sheds at all). Cats need attention and need to be played with as well. My cats love attention from me and get upset when I go away. They are loyal and lifetime companions.
I personally love dogs and cats equally, but I find cats much easier to take care of as you don't have to walk them, let them out to use the bathroom, come home at a certain time to let them out, and you can go out of town for 2 or 3 days and leave them alone if you have to. They just allow me to be much for independent.
It all depends on what breed/mix of cat or dog you get.

I might be the only straight guy to say this but Cat!!
You can leave them for a day or two, and don't have to always leave friends or go home early to let them out.
They poop in a box and not all over the yard.
But dogs generally might be more friendly, depending on the breed I guess.

i have taken care of both. i prefer cats.
1) you can go away for 10 hrs to 2 days and leave food and water.
2.) low noise level. a dog left home alone can bark and anoy neighbors. cats are pretty quiet
3) a cat uses a litter box. no trips outside at 4a.m when it is like 35 below zero or rainy.
4) cats seem to be cleaner. not rolling in mud, garabge or their own waste.

Cat. The cat leaves you alone for the most part, and a dog is just too needy.

It all depends on what you want out of your pet. If you want somethig more independant than a cat is the pet for you. If you want a pet that needs more attention and is more loyal then get a dog. Neither is better, their just different.
