When it comes to painting, aren't you supposed to go in the order of lightest to darkest when it comes to shading? Or would you recommend going in reverse order?

It is always easier to darken a painting rather than lighten it. So logically shading from lightest to darkest makes sense. Though you can shade whatever way you feel most comfortable.

No. Depends on the medium you are using. In general there is no order unless you are doing a watercolor painting. Here you can never go back to light so starting there is the best strategy.

If you are painting in oil you can just paint the shade in the same 'go' as the rest depending on the style. If you are glazing you can also do it is one gradient layer but starting light makes sense.

There is a method where you first make a color free, gray version (grisaille) after that you ad the color. You make a black and white painting and then ad the different grays to it. It keeps you colors extra bright. You should give it a try if you are into painting. It sure will be a nice learning experience.

Depends on the medium. Oil painting - darkest to lightest, mass in dark tones and build up the lighter ones on top. Watercolor - you almost HAVE to start out light and build up the darks on top.

You could do it both ways. I think that the most common would be lightest to darkest. But don't be afraid to experiment. =]

you know what when it comes to the rules....... learn them..... then try your best to avoid them and see what comes cause mistakes and acciedents create the best work.....

but lightest to darkest is more practical when using brushes and water so you can blend up with out murking the colour too much too soon....

good luck :)
