A Staffordshire Bull Terrier or, if that's not big enough, a Bullmastiff. Whichever breed you decide on, buy from a reputable breeder who has KC registered dogs (so you can prove it's not an illegal breed & you know it's purebred). Make sure you buy from someone who also does all the necessary health tests before breeding & who has temperament as a priority.

American Bulldogs are quite simular in looks - they are absolutely stunning dogs........However they have been targeted by the police in the past for being Pit Bull Types, I know of one case where an American Bulldog was seized and the owner convicted under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act and also of puppies being seized by the police from Ed Reid (The man who brought the Pit Bull into the UK originally) again as Pit Bull Types. So although they are not a breed stated on the 1991 Act, you could still find yourself having to defend your dog against being the "type" so i would advise you to be cautious.
At the moment police do not seem particulary active in seizing these dogs but it will only take one unresponsible owner to spark it all off again and then you could have a whole lot of trouble on your hands. just think very carefully about it.
many resuce centres have dogs that i would describe as Pit Bull types up for re-homing - so it may be worth contacting some of them first
good luck with whatever you decide

What would happen is they would fine you, and take the dog away and destroy it.
An alternative is the American Bull Dog. They look like pit bulls only bigger. If you google American Bull Dog pictures will come up but here is some info about them...

The American Bulldog is a loving family companion, good with children and other pets, yet at the same time, fearlessly determined. It has been known to display heroic acts of courage in protecting its master. The American Bulldog has also been used to hunt everything from squirrel to bear, and has been trained to drive cattle and guard stock from predators. The American Bulldog should be evaluated as a working dog, and exaggerations or faults should be penalized in proportion to how much they interfere with the dogs ability to work.

History/Origin:
Bulldogs in England were originally working dogs who drove and caught cattle and guarded their masters' property. At one time, the breed was used in the grueling sport of bull baiting. With the outlawing of the sport in England in 1835, the original type of Bulldog disappeared from Britain and was replaced with the less athletic dog we now know as the English Bulldog. Yet the original Bulldog was preserved by immigrants who brought their working dogs with them to the American South. By the end of World War II, the last remnants of the working English Bulldog were disappearing in the U.S. Thanks to the breeding programs of John D. Johnson and Allen Scott, the breed was brought back from the brink of extinction. The American Bulldog was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1999 in the rare, working class.

If you got one and the police found it the dog would be put down and you would be fined or maybe even jailed so don't do that.
Get a Staffordshire bull terrier. They are a little smaller than Pit Bulls but otherwise are very like them and like Pit Bulls they make great family pets.

I'd choose a Staffie, they're loyal and generally fantastic.
If you get a Pit Bull and the authorities find out you could be fined and the dog impounded. I believe you need a license to keep that type of dog, it needs to be neutered and muzzled at all time when in public, which isn't fair on the dog. Get a Staffie instead.

A great dane is a very nice dog but it is also very large and I understand that there is not a lot of room in some of the apartments/flats in Englad.
I don't know what would happen if the police found it because I didn't even know about the law.
There are also Pit Bulls which are pretty nice and fairly large but not as large as a Dane. If you want something to scare the neighbors buy one of those. However the Danes are actually quite friendly in person.

Australian bull terriers (derived from Staffordshire bull terriers) are lovely dogs. Don't know if they're available in UK. We have the same controversy here about American pit bulls, as many people have been badly mauled by them, some people killed. Aussie bull terriers are a bit shorter than English Staffies, with a rounder (cuter!) head, and a huge smile. They often come with streaky/stripey coats in reddish-brown and black. They're incredibly devoted, affectionate, and loyal.
