To keep the out of towners on their toes. The hicks from the midwest and south are clogging up the sidewalk with their slackjaws hanging wide open staring at the buildings. Somebody needs to wake them up and get them moving.

( no tax the two on honking horns!) :-) ok. jokes aside, the chaotic site visitors jam and probable the lack of ability of civic experience, honking a horn turns into mandatory if one desires tochronic in the congested streets without hitting somebody. anyhow now the situation is recuperating.it will be a lot greater advantageous in destiny i'm particular.

New Yorkers may honk their horns to let people know they are coming but at least we don't really give people the finger like in other states.

Theres a reason to sound you're car horn, it's to let people know that they are changing lanes, to let pedestrians to know to move out of the way. In Manhattan there is a law for most of the borough that prohibits the sounding of your horn.

Some of it is a show of defiance of the law. In NYC, some areas (ie. Holland Tunnel entrance) forbid the sounding of the car horn, with a fine of $100 for violators. This is usually found in areas with a large number of residences.

That split 0.00216 seconds of time lost can severly save someones life in 0.73 of a second they need to get the hick pedestrians out of the way 2.5 seconds after they snap yet another photo of the Empire State building while standing in the middle of the street.

But I have to admit....it's funny how you can give a "friendly" honk at someone because their child's foot is hanging out of the rear door and their trunk is on fire...and they still give you the finger...only in NY...but I love it and wouldn't move if you paid me!

It's not random 'honking' at all. If you listen carefully, you will realise that it is morse code.

Many common morse code 'honking' sayings are:

Hey! I'm honking here!
and
Hey! I'm driving here!

a small percentage of people do that. It is mostly people that think they are more important than other people. It happens everywhere, it is just this is the only place that you are on the street to hear it. The rest of the time you are in your SUV sitting in WalMart's parking lot.
