I am getting a new laptop, and I have the choice of getting it with either XP professional or MCE 2005. I have heard that MCE has all the features of pro, but with the added media center features, so I figured it would be best to get MCE.

I then noticed that the specs for MCE were much heigher than that of home or pro. will this mean my performance will be affected during general use of the laptop, or only when using the media center features???

Some people are saying, if you can afford it, get it, but the main reason I'm considering MCE instead of pro is because its actualy cheaper than pro (I know its weird since it has all the features of pro + more)

MCE is just XP with extras added for doing multi-media. To do multi-media, it has to have more memory, larger hard drive, etc. If you are not using the multi-media, the XP runs indentical to a non-MCE PC. (Only usually faster bacasue the same extra memory and hard drive space that gives you the multi-media also lets XP run faster).

If you can afford the MCE, absolutely go for it.

XP MCE is just an application you run on XP Pro. If you have MCE and don't run it, it will not add that much overhead to the system. There are some process that run to do some scheduling and downloading of the guide.

but all in all - unless you're running MCE in the background it will not be noticed.

MCE just has some fluff added. Things like Windows Dancer and the Media Center Suite. I have and use both regularly and don't notice any difference since I'm not into the Media Center Experience.

Yes of course it doesn't reduce your performance but strains it.
Anyways, its pretty good to use MCE if you are a media buff but make sure that you have a good graphics card and a good speedy RAM.
Thanks,

If you say it is just the pro edition, go for it. The only time you'll suffer from lower performance would be if you multitask to much. Open only programs you would need. I think the only hardware you'll need to be worried about is the RAM and your hard disk space since you plan to buy a laptop.
