have very old shotgun only thing stamped in barrel is letters JR

There is a J.C. Higgins and an H&R but no JR I can think of. It could be foreign or it could have been re-barreled and the JR is the barrel manufacturers stamp.

You had better take it to a gunsmith and have it looked at. The JR could be a person's initials; who knows what. My concern about the old is that it may be damascus (twisted iron) barrels which should not be shot with modern ammo. There were a quadzillion shotguns made from the mid 1800's to now. Prior to the mid 1900's most of them never even had serial numbers. You may even have a collectors item that you could sell and buy a new Remington 870 or something.

The only thing that comes to mind is the MEC 600 JR 12 Gauge Shotgun Shot Shell Reloader, dont know if thats got to do with it but its really old

There's a chance that it was someone's personal gun and they put their initials on it, I can't think of any old gun makers that had the initials JR
