As much as we love our pets, we allow{apatheticaly} the death or neglect of others. I wonder why this is.

This is about "animals", I frankly don't know why some of you are saying people?

I agree with you. Its pathetic how much we "ignore" and pretend doesn't exist. And yet we can't begin our own "crusade". Sorry...

I disagree. If you visit your local pound you will see that our nation kills by gas and lethal injection MILLIONS of abandoned, abused and unclaimed pets per year.

Furthermore, you are comparing apples and oranges. Just because people are starving in other countries is NO reason why I should neglect my own pet. And the reason why others suffer abroad is often related to the political situations in those countries ... often food and medicines are available but infighting among people and political corruption divert many resources into the wrong hands.

Let's see ... how about this question ... why do so many people buy fancy cars, clothes and houses and neglect others? Goodness, they spend a lot more on THOSE material items than they ever will or do spend on their own suffering animals! Even more on those things than they do on their own children!

Well, beyond loving our own pets, and adopting rather than buying pets........ it's impossible to "Save the world". Sure, we can volunteer at the humane society, or make donations to organizations that help strays, BUT there will always be abuse and neglect, and even if apathy was dimininshed, there are always people who are cruel to animals.

Of other's pets? or of people? Animals are without voices, people are generally able to seek help- I know that, for me, the troubles of the world, the suffering of the nameless people, the dire situations are overwhelming, and the best I can do is live my life the best way I can and try to affect change through my behavior and by helping others.

... ? what does loving pets have to do with loving people...? seems like a broad generalization to me. There are plenty of people in the world who dont love pets and plenty of people who try to not neglect others

i don't "allow" the neglect of other animals. if i see an abusive situation i report it. i know it goes on daily in every town in the world, there is only so much one person can do.

I think that household animals give UNCONDITIONAL love to us, they are 100% trusting, and loving and rely on US to take care of them. They are helpless , and defenseless and really would never intentionally hurt us. They are kind, and affectionate. Can you say the same for all people? For me, cats, dogs, are much less likley to hurt me, offend me, belittle me, steal from me, sleep with my husband, steal my identity...ya see? really, cats and dogs, are just NICER than people!

The same reason why we flip out if our own child is sick, yet do nothing about children suffering abroad. It's just the way people function, they tend to care more about what is theirs.

I for one, care for all sorts of animals besides the ones that actually belong to me.
