If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. -- James Madison

'When the government fears the people it is a democracy....when the people fear their government it is tyranny...' --- Thomas Jefferson

Those who give up essential liberties for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -- Benjamin Franklin

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive.– Thomas Jefferson

The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home. – James Madison

"I have examined all the known superstitions of the world, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned. What has been the effect of this coercion? To make one half of the world fools and the other half hypocrites; to support roguery and error all over the earth." -------Thomas Jefferson

"Christianity...[has become] the most perverted system that ever shone on man....Rogueries, absurdities and untruths were perpetrated upon the teachings of Jesus by a large band of dupes and importers led by Paul, the first great corrupter of the teaching of Jesus." ------ Thomas Jefferson

"In every country and in every age the PRIEST has been hostile to liberty; he is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own." – Thomas Jefferson

I would add James Madison's Memorial and Remonstrance.

The subject is, "A Bill establishing a provision for Teachers of the Christian Religion", excerpt as follows:

"What a melancholy mark is the Bill of sudden degeneracy? Instead of holding forth an Asylum to the persecuted, it is itself a signal of persecution. It degrades from the equal rank of Citizens all those whose opinions in Religion do not bend to those of the Legislative authority. Distant as it may be in its present form from the Inquisition, it differs from it only in degree. The one is the first step, the other the last in the career of intolerance. The maganimous sufferer under this cruel scourge in foreign Regions, must view the Bill as a Beacon on our Coast, warning him to seek some other haven, where liberty and philanthrophy in their due extent, may offer a more certain respose from his Troubles."

There are even more statements about this. Adams and Jefferson both knew that religion wasn't for them, but they didn't think the masses would behave without it. They were really intelligent people. However, democracy allows the votes of the stupid count as much as those of the intelligent, so ultimately, a religious tyranny could not be avoided.

They have been very intellegent individuals who would foresee what would probably occur. It's identical to the ten Commandments...among the matters we all know we should not be doing considering we're instructed to not, we do besides. I suppose you might experience studying Representative's Ron Paul's ebook The Revelation: A Manifesto. It talks approximately your disorders precisely; our involvement in international disorders, taxing and the politcal department in America. Read, I realize you can adore it!

If I were religious, which I am not, I would vote to make Thomas Jefferson a saint

The predominantly christian founding fathers had the wisdom to legislate to keep religion out of politics and law, when they wrote the constitution.

These men were arguably wiser and more moral than the people of today.

They tried to warn about it. I don't think that they would have suspected it would be the ragtag collection of snake oil salesmen running the attempt to establish a theocracy now to be the threat though. I think that they had too much faith in the reasoning powers of people.
