Maggie and Peggy are both diminutives for Margaret. Just like Bob is for Robert or Bill is for William.

Maggies is the short form for Margaret, alone with Peggy and Marge.

It is common in English to shortern names of people that we are close to. So most people called Sam have the name Samuel or Samantha.

Names in English have many different origins. Some are French, German, Saxon, Gaellic, Hebrew, Greek, Latin and so on.

As a result, sometimes the short version of a name can also be a name in itself. For example Jennifer and Jenny. While it might appear that Jenny is short for Jennifer it is actually a name in itself. Even Terry and Terrence are another example.

Maggie is only a abbreviation for Margaret.

Other time the long version has a extra meaning. Like Carol, and Carolina (ina being an ending making the name mean little Carol)

More complicated is the fact that many people make up their own names and spellings (especially during the late 1980s and early 1990s).

Maggie is one of those diminutive nicknames in which the letter "r" is dropped; for example, Kit is substituted for Christopher, Biddy comes from Bridget, Fanny is originally Frances, and Hattie derives from Harriet. Of course, a lot of English nicknames also end in "y" or "ie" (a Scots' ending by the way): Johnny, Davy, Bessy, Peggy, Maggie, Annie.

Besides Maggie, Margaret has a multitude of other nicknames: Gretchen, translated as "Little Margaret", and Gretel (both from the German, Margarete), Margot, Rita (from the Spanish, Margarita), Maggie, Madge, May, Maisie, Maidie, Peggy, Peg, and Daisy (from the French Marguente, which literally translates as daisy, which is a little strange because Margaret means "pearl").

Maggie is short for Margaret...strangely enough, people also call people named Margaret by the name Peggy. Not sure why at all....but it's common.

Maggie is a shortened version of Margaret. Sort of along the lines of Barbara and Barb...
