I just purchaced a 1974 Charger Rally which has the 205 Hp (400 cid) which is a N code in the vin. I see they also made a 250 HP (400 cid) which would be be a P code in the vin.

What i'm looking for is the differents in the 205 hp (400 cid)
& the 250 HP (400 cid) in 1974?

Both engines had 8.4 compression.

amy az is headed in the right direction. It has do with the cam. The heads, blocks and intakes were all the same casting. So the 400-4HP engine had a different cam than the 400-4 engine.

The difference in horse power could be a change in heads castings from the 906 to the 452's or a change in cam specks Also that could represent the difference between 2 and 4 barrel versions.Chrysler didn't have lean burn in 1974.Also if you swap to a 440 you don't have to swap the k frame the 400 is a big block as well just a b motor or low deck.

I remember 1974 and american cars got smogged up. Performance was terrable and Lean burn systems caused lots of carburator difficulty. Any Dodge engine back then was way down on power as were Chevy and Ford. Just bite the bullet and Buy a 440 10 to one Crate motor with High Rise Manifold Replace the Carb with Holley 4BBL Pro-Inject system and make almost 500 streetable horsepower. That will satisfy need for speed. Rember the K frame will also need to change
