Do you realize how futile it is to quote the bible to atheists? Not just because we consider it bizarre to spend your life worshiping what essentially is just shapes formed by ink on paper, we have no proof of a gods existance whatsoever. But more importantly, in order to define ourselves as atheists and not agnostics we have made a conscious decision to disbelieve the bible, this can only be done if we know exactly what we have decided against, so logicaly, we must already be familiar with the bible

Never mind math and science, why can they not just use common sense and logical reasoning to lend credibility to their arguments? Maybe because faith requires a blind and narrow minded mentality and when you are mentally blind and narrow minded you are unable to reason logically and with common sense.

p.s. very good point.

Quite honestly, I think you are one of very few Atheists who have made a so-called logical decision. Most of the Atheists I know have never even opened a Bible, but that's beside the point.

I agree that it is pointless to quote Scripture to prove something to an Atheist. If you don't believe that God exists, it is logical to assume that you won't view the Bible as a viable source.

However, if an Atheist asks about the Christian beliefs, I think it is okay to quote Scripture as part of the answer because it is what we believe and therefore is a valid answer to the question.

The Moral Majority or Christian Right is comprised of the most illiterate, racist bigots in the U.S. today. These people do not know "why" they believe what they believe, but are comfortable in their beliefs because they are surrounded by similar people of the same beliefs, which none of them have ever understood.

Most have never read the bible, because most have an 8th grade education.

Most of these people are not capable of rationale, or comparative thinking, because they know nothing outside their narrow realm.

They quote, preach and rant the exact same bible verses as their dim-witted neighbors. They feel safe and content because to them no one "is the wiser", which is in fact true, because they no know one wiser than the smartest high school drop out.

Just last night FOX news interviewed Billy Graham Jr. When asked a question he attempted a reply and after five or six words his comment became a sermon, complete with at least eight verses and "God Willing, God Saved us, God died for our sins," etc. etc. He never answered the question, despite his Free Will to think.

There would appear to be supernatural power in the words of the bible. Like it says in Isaiah 55 - God's words won't return to Him without effect. Also Jesus says His words are spirit and life. So albeit many reading atheists might mentally have contempt for them, I think they probably have an effect in at least someone's life, as God's grace moves.

Having said that people can at times perhaps overdo it with the bible quotes; but this is the R&S section - surely bible quotes are to be expected. Atheists can quote from Rousseau, Marx, Bertrand Russell, Darwin and Dawkins if they like.

Your question and reasoning is good. But I know atheist that have not read the bible through and just made the decision to be atheist because there questions could not be answered.I truly believe that you should be informed to make a good decision like you said. The others are all confused.

Quoting the bible to an atheist is the same as giving someone who is trying to operate a forklift truck a recipe for chili con carne.

We know that you do not believe in God and you do not believe in the Bible. It s a great thing that you have made decision, that is what we are supposed to do with our free will.

However, I believe in Christ and I believe that the Bible is true, and that is why I quote the Bible, not just to atheists but also to everybody else.

I am not here to please you, I am here in the "official Jesus business" and I quote His Word. Your opinion about the truth does not change the truth a one bit. But you are entitled to your opinion. : )

Whats a Bible?

I rather think I know the bible a lot better than most Xtians! I've read it cover to cover, and my opinions are not based on edited highlights or carefully selected bits! When I challenge their assertions that god is love, and god does not condone hatred etc etc with quotes showing just what a filthy, vile and amoral text their scared book is, they go deeper in denial than an Egyptian skin diver, either calling me a liar or claiming that bit of the bible somehow doesn't count!

You believe that because you don't know or believe the power of the Word of God. Christians do know the power therein and we have been told by our God that using the Word will produce other Christians as well as protect us from Satan. This we believe and know to be true so, though it sounds like foolishness to the atheist, we will always rely on the truth of the Word when we discuss what we believe. Our whole faith is based on God's Word so it is impossible to separate the Christian from the Word. And based just on the posts here by atheists, I cannot logically assume any of them are familiar with the Bible. It is so misinterpreted and taken out of context on this site alone, that would be preposterous to think they know what they're talking about. Sorry, but your premise doesn't hold water. Just reading some of the scriptures and twisting the meaning does not make one familiar with God's Word at all. Peace to you and may our Lord reveal Himself to you.

Fully agree, although the other way round - quoting to bible to christians - is a lot more fun; they believe all the bad parts to have been 'taken out of context'
