I just found out that my foster dog has tapeworm, round worm, AND hookworm. He was treated by vet yesterday everything else is fine..BUT I am worried about my other 2 dogs...The Vet said as long as my dogs are on Heartguard (it has some other worm preventative) and clean up his poop in yard, they should be fine...So my questin is how long will it take if my dogs caught any to showup? He's been here for 4 days...I am keeping an eye on my dogs poop (yuck)..Should I just deworm them anyway to be cautious? Thanks..

The prepaitent period,, for most worms is around 4 wekks, that is the point of infection till a stool sample will test positive..
You often DO not see hooks or rounds in a dogs stool.. only a micro exam will reveal if they are there..
Again your dog cannot get tapes from the foster dog,, unless he also came in with fleas.. Tapes can be seen in when a dog goes..
As far as rounds and hooks.. Hearguard does prevent infection.. Make sure you pick up after the foster dog..that is a BIG help.. and if you are really concern have your vet either check a stool sample in a month.. or better yet worm the group with panacure..

Don't fuss so much this is a very common issue with fostering... and your dogs are not a serious risk.. chances are they are NOT going to get the worms.. and are as much risk as picking up these parasites,, Just when you take them places.. Worms are everywhere.. not just your foster dog.. so a approperate preventitive program (heatguard, Routien Stool sample checks) that you already do.. HAVE YOU COVERED..

Good luck

First if and when they show up in the poop it's really out of control as it would be teh adult worms. I would say in about a month take a stool sample in from your other 2 dogs and have it tested. The heartguard should prevent the dogs from getting anything except tapeworm.
Tapeworm is caused by fleas.
Good Luck

Yes you should deworm the other dogs anyway. Every dog should be dewormed regularly as a preventative measure, you're not supposed to wait until they have worms. Prevention is better than cure.

Tapeworms might take about 6 weeks to appear in the faeces - what you see in the faeces are the worm segments, it's how they reproduce (there are eggs in those segments) so you have to wait for the worms to attach in the gut and reach sexual maturity before they start to shed. Don't wait, worm the dogs!

My Doberman puppy had tapeworms when I got him and I saw the worms right away, but after he was de-wormed I didn't see them anymore. I would have assumed he would poop out the dead ones, but I never saw anything. He is clean now, so it did work. I guess sometimes you just don't see them.
Also, my vet said to not let my dogs share water. Tapeworms, as well as any worm, is very contagious, so in two weeks you should have your other dog checked out just to be sure. Two weeks is the gestation period for worms, so don't waste money having it checked before then.

Only tapeworms will show up in poop and they are from eating fleas. As long as your dogs are adults and on a heartworm preventative they will be fine. And as long as they don't have fleas. Whipworms can be a problem tho and I used to worm my dogs twice a year for whips but have not had to for years as we moved. Whips and hooks can be picked up at a dog park or anywhere any dog has pooped. Roundworms are more a puppy problem and adults rarely have them.

Heartgaurd is good to help yours. As a foster bringing in CR*P all the time I like revolution as a preventative for mine. It also does fleas/ticks and sarcoptic mange prevention. Talk to your vet about trying it.
