I've heard this old wives tale that you could have to have your tongue amputated from having it pierced and it getting infected. Has anybody heard of this happening? lol. Also, anybody had any issues with a tongue piercing?

The comments about other people not liking it can be completely left out. I'm doing this for myself, not to make you, or anyone else happy. ;D

i have mine done
and THIS is the reality of it.
As long as your piercer is professional you should have few if any problems, they will best advise you on aftercare.
as for the rest? your tongue will be swollen for 3-4 days after wards and wont swell immediately after piercing, it will take a few hours. you are best to avoid eating solid foods at this point and should prepare some nice clear soup, or smooth custard in advance. drinking straws will be your friend for a few days too and help enormously. it is a little uncomfortable in the first few days but that's due to the swelling not pain or anything like that. once the swelling subsides you are well away but you should keep the long bar in for approx 2 weeks, just in case swelling re occurs. after that, go back to your piercer and you will be fitted with a suitable permanent length bar. you may lisp for a few days but once the swelling has gone, so will the lisp, although my mother finds it hard to believe, i never know mines is there unless i think about it, i have 3 in my mouth, tongue, labret and Medusa, i never notice any of them. Have your piercing, look after it properly during healing, and enjoy it!!! good luck

Well, first of all, one problem you might have is that some people won't like your tongue piercing. I for one, think it's unattractive. Why would you want to kiss someone with a tongue piercing. (How many guys or girls hav eyou heard say "I love the metal on that guy/girl's tongue!" As for the possibility of infection, I would not refer to that as an old wives tale at all, and the possibility that a bad enough infection could result in the amputation of your tongue is also something I find very believable. It's up to you, but i wouldn't do it.

The old wives tale is rubbish and so not true. When i had mine done i found it hard to eat certain foods and found that I had to drink most of my drinks through a straw. ( the liquid tend to make my tongue hurt but using the straw it didnt have to go near the bar.)

I'd advise against it but I suppose it's all about personal choice. For instance some of my friends have theirs done and it's sometimes hard to understand them while they are speaking. It also damages/chips their teeth from behind.
