There were about 70 of them invited and we aren't getting catered. I'm hoping for the least expensive way to do this without it being totally lame!!!

Do a barbecue - burgers (meat and veggie), hot dogs and/or grilled sausages, grilled vegetables (onions, peppers, mushrooms etc). Serve a couple of kinds of potato chips, maybe some coleslaw and/or potato salad (not hard to make and not expensive to make either). Tossed green salad.

And dessert can be - chocolate chip brownies (chocolate chip cookie dough baked as brownies), mini regular brownies, make-you-own ice cream cones or cupcakes (though that could be messy). Or just buy some really amazing cookies or a sheet cake. Non-alcoholic punch or plain soda or lemonade to drink.

That way you can feed a lot of people for not too much money - depending on what you serve. Plus paper plates equal a really quick cleanup, which is crucial. Because you are going to be tired!

BTW this is SO nice of you to do for your sister!

You can do pigs in a blanket, sandwiches, chips and dip. Lots of finger foods. Sams is a great place to get simple stuff in bulk. You can have a cake made too with their school's insignia on it. Or try going to the local college/community college and ask for a student in the Cuisine arts program. Lots of times they'll cater for you at 3/4 the cost of a regular caterer, plus it helps them with a great reference. We had this done for a birthday party and it was cheaper than had we done it ourselves. Good luck!

my sis had one of these. i know its totally out of season but they were so good. about 70? okay.
so take about 200 (gee tahts a lot) litttle cupcake papers and put a nilla wafer at the bottom of each one.

take some of that canned pumpkin pie mix ( the kind with the sugar and seasoning already mixed in, not the pure puree stuff) top each cookie with a spoonfull. not too much! maybe a tbsp

put a dollop of whip cream on each one, and YUM

you could also try sandwiches and chips and veggies

I'm not sure if you should worry. I mean they're 5th graders--they won't care if it's gourmet stuff. All they care about is it tasting good. Since it's summer you could get some good fruit order Pizza, grill (a lot) of hot dogs or hamurgers.

Hope the party is fun!

It's fun to bake cake in ice cream waffle bowls and decorate them like sundaes. You can do the same thing and bake cake in ice cream cones. They're really cute and kids love them and because it's cake and not ice cream, you don't have to worry about it melting in the heat!
