There are different types of tests depending on what makes the thyroid gland work wrong.
First of all, the screening test which is kind of a general check up is called: "Serum thyroid-simulating hormone or TSH sensitive assay" and the other is called "free thyroxine(T4)"
These tests give a clue to the doctor to know where the problem can be.
Once you suspect an specific disease there are multiple tests(too many to write them down) to find out if this is the reason why you are sick.
The main purposes for taking a test is: suspecting hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism or a thyroid nodule. that depends on your symptoms and signs, such as loosing weight, diarrea, hipertension etc...
